And you may have also heard that there is the so-called Argyle color grading scale. Let’s see what this scale is and how it compares to that of the GIA. Diamonds are graded based on a system of 4Cs that was created by GIA. Color is one of the elements that makes up a key component in a diamond’s value. In white or colorless diamonds, the absence of color drives the value of the stone upwards due to relative rarity in nature. A diamond’s clarity, or its relative lack of inclusions and blemishes, is graded on a scale ranging from Flawless to Included. The size, number, position, relief, and the type of inclusion or blemish present, and how easily they can be seen at 10X magnification determine a diamond’s clarity grade. There are many grading scales used to describe diamond clarity; however, the diamond grading scale used by the Gemological Institute of America (GIA) is probably the most well known.
